My eldest just finished up a birthday party. Eight years old. We went the more expensive and labor intensive route and had a party at the house.
Burgers and hot dogs on the grill, chips and guac, fruit and vegetable crudité (you can tell I'm from the F&B industry) with a variety of beverages of the non-soda kind. The eldest wanted a piñata and that was the only candy or true junk food other than the cake of course.
Lots of people and it seemed to be a hit. We're already thinking that next year we'll give the kid an option. The party or cash. Even if we offer $100 that will be less than the party.
Two more kids for the year and then it's over, until next year. Man, they're expensive.
