Years ago I used to work at a nicer hotel restaurant. I wasn't some manager that required everyone to be busy working whenever I walked by but I expected your job to be done before you started...juggling.
It was a slow night and our busboy was juggling because he was caught up with his job. Then he said something that you never say to a boss "I'm bored". We'll fix that little problem for you.
Our chairs were in some style that required a lot of carving so they caught dust all of the time; I had him dust all of the chair bases. Same night that he finishes the chair bases and he says he's bored. I have him dust the wrought iron in the restaurant. The next time he's bored I have him clean the ceiling vents. He still hasn't learned to not tell me he's bored. Now I'm running out of things for him to clean (I'm proud to say that we kept that place pretty clean). I loan him to the kitchen for some general cleaning, he doesn't tell me he's bored anymore. This busboy (16 years old) quits working for us and goes to
work at Burger King because they will give him more hours or better pay or something.
He's there one night and he comes back asking for his job back because of all the stuff they
had him do. We hire him back and he never needs to be told to clean ceilings, chairs, or
wrought iron again.
