Open minds.

I read some article today about a cop being ambushed and killed today.  That's terrible, anytime a person dies is terrible, this one just hit home because my wife is a cop.

I made the mistake of reading some of the comments.  The first one was basically the same sentiment as I had.  About 90% of the rest were some variant of "the jack-booted thug deserved it".

WHAT?  They were saying that the  cop deserved to die because he was a cop and therefore corrupt.  I'll be the first to admit that anytime you have a big enough group of people you will get some bad apples in the group.  Who knows, maybe if you get a big enough group of scumbags some will run counter to expectations.

If you don't like cops, fine.  Nothing wrong with having an opinion.  While you're at it, have an open mind also.  If every cop is corrupt don't you think someone would have said something about it in the news.  Even if you've had a bad experience with a corrupt cop what makes you think that all of them are corrupt?

How about this, you keep an open mind and try to do a ride along with your local police.  If you still don't like cops after that, and you've given them a fair shake, fine.  Don't like them.  Your choice.

What truly pisses me off is the complete disregard for the person behind the badge.  This person had a family.  Don't you think they cried because he died?  No matter how bad a person is their is a mother crying over their child being gone.  Or, no matter how bad you think a person is.  Think all you want, just keep an open mind.
