School standards.

My teen showed us a paper from school recently.  She had used abbreviations (real and text) in this essay and the teacher was okay with it.  WHAT THE HELL?

She used "ppl" as an abbreviation for people.  Correct or incorrect is not the question, the question is why abbreviate in the first place?  Obviously, some abbreviations are okay (misc. for miscellaneous is a prime example).  Why are the teachers allowing this?

My teen wanted to wear headphones or earplugs when taking some standardized test.  The school was okay with this.  Why is the school allowing this?

My concern is with the future.  If my child is writing a doctoral thesis or application and she abbreviates words that aren't commonly abbreviated how does she look?  Especially to a competitor that writes properly?  Many business give out personality and aptitude tests to applicants, will they allow you to wear earplugs?  If you want to be a librarian, maybe.  Pretty much everyone else will think that if you can't handle this test then you probably can't handle the job.

By catering to every little whim are we really helping these kids?  In the business world, these people will be ignored and they will be shocked that businesses aren't catering to them.
